lonesome

Deserted
An Essay on Loneliness
By Emmanuel Perry
8th grade, Pine Point School
November 22,  2010

(TS)Have you ever been alone? (CM)Was it because no one seemed to care about you? (CM)It could be because no one you knew was there, and you felt companionless in a sea of strangers. (SD)Here’s an even more challenging question to respond to: why is being lonely considered bad? (CM)Sometimes we need the quiet, to get to know ourselves a little better. (CM)However, it can change a person, especially one who wasn’t alone by choice, in a bad way, leaving a near phobic fear of being abandoned again. (CS)Just like how Dill felt one summer night with Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird’…

(SD) One night Scout, and her friend, Dill, had a conversation about why he left his home some 3,000 miles away. (CM) Dill explained how unwanted he felt, like a broken toaster in the dusty attic.  (CM) “ That wasn’t it he- they just wasn’t interested in me” was Dill's response to the question. (CM) He also mentioned that when he requested his dad’s aid to build a boat with him,a boat that could go on water, his dad ignored him. They never started the project, even a year later. (SD) Not only did his parents not want to do anything with Dill, they also did not talk with him! (CM) Dill explained that they purchased all he ever wanted –toys, books, and maybe some candy, even! (CM) “ You’re not a boy. Boys go out and play baseball with other boys, they don’t hang around the house worrying their folks” is what his dad said whenever Dill hung around the house too long.

(SD) Sometimes I felt forlorn when I had to go to an adult only party.  (CM) Usually my parents said that there would be some kids there when it turns out they’re all at home playing games and eating pizza. (CM) So I went there thinking that it would be an all age party. (CM) Discouragingly, the party consisted of people over 30!  (SD) Another thing that added to my discomfort, especially when I was little, was that grown ups talk about different things. (CM) For example, I might want to talk about something I learned at school or an experience at a theme park I’ve been to. (CM)They didn’t seem interested in what I was saying unless they asked me about it first. (CM) So I walked away, feeling dejected, to my table and drank the last of a soda. (SD) As I got older, things changed. (CM) I learned that it is best to talk about the other person's likes first and to be polite. (CM)  I have started to laugh at adults’ jokes as well as being more interested in their conversations. (CM) Now I am no longer feeling forsaken at these parties.

(SD)You can prevent someone from being lonesome if you engage in conversations with him or her, specifically something they like, or do an activity together. (CM)You may make a new friend by doing so. (CM)No one wants to be friendless; having no one to comfort you in hard times, no one to cheer you up in good times, either for that matter! (SD)It really puts me in a hot pot when people are sad and alone. (CM)I hope one day the world will learn to acknowledge others for who they are and show more respect

Self Assessment
1.) One problem I am working on is that  my essay agrees with my outline
2.) One thing in this essay that was really good was the bell words. I worked really hard to find them
3.) Sometimes my essay gets a little off track when I want to cram in another idea into it when I am working on my closing paragraph

growing up 1

GROWING UP
An Essay on Age
by Emmanuel Perry
Pine Point School
November 4, 2010
Have you ever wondered what growing up really means? To me, it means changing how you act and how you think. You also may have changed without trying, just like Jem did in To Kill a Mockingbird. He started to get irritated easier and didn’t always want to play with his sister, Scout. In addition, he also preferred to have his baths in private and would lock others out of the bath room until he was done. I have had some changes, too!   One thing I noticed about myself two years ago was that I had a fear of the dark. It was pretty serious! I could not go to my room without someone with me. As I got older, I got more confident and brave. I believed whatever was there in the darkness I could handle. Now, however, I know nothing is there but thinking I could handle it made me a more confident person. I believe growing up may seem like something you don’t want. I mean, who ever wanted to be old?  Even so, aging is a great way to learn and change the way you act and think.

essay 6

     Secrets
An Essay on Untold Back Stories
By Emmanuel Perry

                                        Pine Point School

October 25,2010

(IS) Is your parent a good hunter? Was he or she a Hydraulics engineer? (CM) It turns out that there is always something about your parents you didn’t know. (CM) It may not be the coolest thing ever, but it is still something new that you’ve learned. (SD) Sometimes you need to be in a certain situation like Jem and Scout and a dog named Tim Johnson.

(TS) Jem and Scout used to think that their dad was just another lawyer who stood up for black people until one day when they wandered into the woods and found something a little unnerving. (SD) When they got to the clearing at the end of the path they found old Tim, a good-sized dog, lumbering menacingly toward them and drooling excessively. (CM) When they told this to Calpurnia, she quickly set out to warn the whole town! (CM) “Nothing is more dangerous than a deserted, waiting street…” is how Scout describes the town, awaiting the dog like the plagues of Egypt. (SD) The sheriff was on the scene along with Atticus and the kids looking out the window. (CM) They had just cornered Tim onto the front lawn of the Radley’s home, and the sheriff gave Atticus the shotgun. (CM) What happened next was obvious; “ the rifle cracked. Tim Johnson leaped, flopped over and crumpled on the sidewalk...He didn’t know what hit him.”(CS) Jem and Scout were amazed as they realized their dad was more than just a boring lawyer; he was the legend “One-Shot Finch”!

(IS) I used to think my dad was cool but now he is even cooler. (SD) When I was wrestling with him one day I grabbed his shoulders and felt something. (CM) I asked him why he had those bumps and after a short interrogation, (CM) I found out something pretty fascinating. (SD) My dad used to work on hydraulic systems in chemical plants and malls. (CM) Hydraulic systems spray water when smoke or fire is detected. (CM) He said the bumps were from years of carrying pipes and other heavy equipment. (CM) He was certified in four states and worked on the Crystal Mall! (SD) This discovery was pretty interesting to me. (CS) I wonder what other things I may find out about my dad!
(SD) Parents may seem like boring, taller, older people who go to work and play on their iPads©. (CM) They seem very flat at first glance, but if you spend time with them, they will become much deeper than last time. (SD) All you have to do is ask them, like I did, or just find out like Jem and Scout. (CS) In conclusion, the best way to learn is to discover things yourself.

The writers block
by: Emmanuel

Ever had a writer’s block?
A writer’s cramp?
The great wall of anti-creativeness?
Well I’ve got it
I’ve got it bad!
  I can’t think of anything!
Should I write about ninjas?
A mystery?
Nature?
I want to fall on my back and cry “ ARRRRRGH!”
Wait a minuet
Hold the mayo!
I’ve got it
 I’ve got the idea1
I’ll write about having a writer’s block
Oh, I just did, didn’t I?

crying essay

Crying
An Essay on an Important Emotion
By Emmanuel Perry
Pine Point School
October 12,2010

Crying- boy does it have a lot of variations! It shows happiness, sadness, and anger. It also shows pain. Crying when in pain is considered showing weakness among many people. I personally used to cry a lot and I’ve realized that it does not mean weakness. In fact, it sometimes helps those who cry.

        (T)  In TKAM 9 (To Kill a Mockingbird), Scout and Jem found this tree with a little hollow inside that had something new in it every day. (SD)When they decided that no one owned the items in the tree, they decided to take the things in the hollow, keeping them all to themselves, telling no one about what they found. (CM)As time went on, they found two soap hoodoo dolls carved to look like them. (SD)Scout seemed to recognize them as hoodoo dolls, which probably works like a voodoo doll; you do something to the doll and the real person will feel it. (CM)As the story progresses, Scout realizes that Jem has been crying, hiding his tears. (CM)They also had some intense itches for the same reason; the hoodoo dolls! It makes sense that that would be why Jem was crying. (CS) His doll probably got punctured by a needle or got squeezed. In conclusion, I believe Jem was crying not because of the tree being cement filled, but the fact that he was in pain.

(T) Many men and some women often say that crying shows weakness.(SD) To me, crying is a little more complicated than that. (CM) Crying is often linked with being sad. However, it is also used when angry, happy, or emotionally confused. (CM)Some people cry when a loved one dies because they are sad. (CM) In addition, you may cry when someone breaks your favorite possession because you are angry with that person.(CM) It does not show weakness at all. It's just used when in a very stressing time.(SD) Interestingly enough, crying also does something for a person. (CM) When you cry, it usually gets any sadness out of the way or extinguishes a building anger. (CM)It also makes people ask you what is wrong and may even comfort you in your hard times. (SD)  When I was little, I had a hard time doing my math, and my mom tried to help me. (CM) It was going ok until I got confused (again…) and my mom couldn’t help me understand why my answer was wrong. (CM)We got into a heated argument and she finally stopped giving help.(CM) I was so frustrated that I cried in my room. After crying, I felt refreshed and went back downstairs to finish my homework.

(T)So, in conclusion, you now know my opinion on crying and why it is used. (CM)Jem used it for pain since he was pricked by it. (CM)I used it because I was confused and frustrated. (SD)Have you ever cried? (CM) How did it feel when you were done?  (CM)Did it help you at all? (SD)Finally, it is ok to cry; it doesn’t show how weak you are.(CM) It shows how you feel inside. (CM)What matters are the feelings inside.(CM) Not what people say.(CS) So feel free to cry today if necessary.

boo Radley Essay

Boo Radley and his Neighbors

An essay on Boo and his property

By Emmanuel Perry

8th grade English

Pine Point School

October 5th, 2010

(TS) Have you ever seen people loitering or looking at you from their yard? (SD)How do you feel about that? (CM) Do you feel uneasy or afraid? (CM) What would you do in that situation? (CS) Keep that in mind as I talk about this man named Boo Radley and his sneaky neighbors.
(T)Boo Radley is a legend in Maycomb County. (SD) They believe he killed his father and now lives alone. (CM) They also say he looks like a monster and eats raw animals.(CM) With the information so far, he does seem to be the kind of person you’d love to see in a dark alley, right? (SD) There is also a rascally band of friends, who sneak around his house trying to find out more about Boo Radley.  (CM) These kids quietly sneak onto his property and try to see inside his windows. (CM) One time they even tried to give him a note on a fishing pole.(SD) I think that they should leave this man alone. (CM)If he wanted to be seen he would be outside, am I not correct?(SD) On the other hand, they seem like they just want to see Boo Radley and maybe even talk to him. (CM) I understand, however, that these kids just want to say hello. (CM) I Think I would probably do the same. (CS) Eventually, however, they should just leave him be.
(T)In conclusion, I hope you have understood Mr. Radley’s point of view. (SD) In addition, I hope I explained the kid’s reasons, too. (CM)So next time you see people on your yard or driveway, think about what they may be thinking. (CM)Maybe you should go outside and say hello. (CS)You might just make some new friends!

Self Assessment

metaphor Essay

I Am The Ant
An exciting Metaphoric paragraph
An essay by Emmanuel Perry
8th grade
Pine Point School
October 4, 2010

Have you ever wondered what kind of animal you would be. Or, not only an animal, but maybe an inanimate object like a rock or a tree. It seems so easy to compare someone to something else. What about comparing yourself with something else? I wondered that same question myself. I believe I have found something that is about as unique and proud as I am…

It is hard to describe myself, but I would probably be an ant. The ant may be not the strongest of insects, but it still works hard. I am not the most physically fit; I can barely do 10 push-ups! But I work hard in everything I do. Ants also have an adventurous spirit. They go fearlessly into the unknown in search of food or a new house for their colony. I myself have some adventure inside me. I love to go places I've never been before, see things I never knew existed, or meet new people. Ants are also very social creatures, very much like me. They work together, even without an appointed leader. When something needs to be done in a group, I try to make sure we all get a fair share of work so no one gets into a fight. Speaking of fighting, have you ever picked up an ant? They would probably start biting you, right? That is somewhat like me, when I get 'picked' on; I sometimes go on the offensive. You have to learn when to apply force; otherwise you may not get many friends in life.
In conclusion, I believe I have all the characteristics of an ant: adventurous, defensive, hard working, social, and a sugar lover! I have other traits that are not like ants, but that's what makes me unique. And I am proud to be me!

Self assessment
  1. To have the beginning and ending paragraphs go together with the body paragraph.
  2. The strong point is I have my own flair to this essay.
  3. When I have to write the intro/ending paragraphs after I write the body paragraph , they don't seem to go together well. This could be helped if I do this all at the same time.
  4. I would give myself a B.

Ms. Peggy

The Mysterious Ms.Peggy

              An Essay on my Neighbor
Strange, it is an interesting word. It could be a good thing, could be a bad thing. Strange could mean a taste. It could be something odd you see. If  you use strange to describe someone, it usually means something that that person does that isn't your 'normal'. However, it doesn't always mean they are creepy. strange can also mean they are interesting. The person who I think fits Interesting is Ms. Peggy.

My neighbor Ms. Peggy is a very interesting person. She may seem odd, until you meet her. So let me tell a little bit about her so you can recognize her. Ms. Peggy is a small woman that is about 50 years old. She also has a lot of blond hair in a somewhat messy piled form. I've known Ms. Peggy for a long time and I usually see her walking. Besides for exercise she walks to get her mail and other things around town instead of driving. When she's not walking or driving somewhere out of walking distance, she is probably in her garage on a lawn chair reading a newspaper. When she is outside, she sees many kinds of animals.I say this because she has so many animal stories to tell when i come over with my sister. like deer or turkeys or even woodpeckers on her roof. Speaking of going over to her house, Ms. Peggy rarely gets visits from anyone. I don't think she has any family besides her two neighbors. Even so, ms. Peggy is a very happy and healthy person. She also enjoys going to the local vegetable stand and buying corn to roast. She even eats THAT outside. To conclude, i believe ms. Peggy is 'strange'
but in a good way. I hope you get to meet someone like her some day...

There are many odd people in the world, you may know some. This word can mean many things. It can say you dislike someone, or  are facinated by their distinct characteristics. What I wrote about is someone in my life who is diffrent than the others in a special sort of way. 'Stange', it IS an interesting word...

The sun and moon

The sun sheds its warmth  on us
 strong and bright
don't stay out too long
he also gives us light
so we can read and play outside
and he smiles upon us too
like a proud father smiling at his son
but when he sets
who will gives us light?
the stars are too far away
and our own light is small
so here comes the moon
the great silver ball
she projects gentle light
but not the same warmth
and sets us off to bed
and we say
Goodnight.

My feelings on summer

english #1
Emmanuel Perry
9/15/10
     My Feelings On Summer
An Essay on my favorite Season

My feelings on summer ending could be best described by the song "So long Sweet Summer".
The Phrase, 'I stumbled upon you and basked in your rays' could relate to how I enjoyed being outside under the sun. During the summer I went all over the US and an island called Bimini. Most of the places were, in fact, really sunny. "I fell into you but now you are falling away'. This relates to how I got so comfortable, then suddenly school came out of the blue. When school came around, the line 'so long sweet slumber' relates to how I got less sleep in school than in summer. 'it's cold were your going, I hope that your hearts always warm' means how winter comes after fall. It also explains that summer will always welcome me next year.
I will really miss summer, and I can't wait for it next year. Even though I'll miss it, I'll do my best in school. :]

Self Assessment:  one problem i have is making words go together that sound ok but are not written that way. One strong point in my essay was that i related to the song a lot and those made good sense. on my down side ( :[ ) i think i need to work on my essays length so it is 11 sentences long.
